| I gather the raw materials |
![]() |
| Each bag is labeled and filled with a pair of socks and an origami crane |
![]() |
| Now it is time to print the notes |
![]() |
| Printing half a page at a time allows me to work around the chrysanthemum motif |
![]() |
| My rotary cutter works for paper too (although I may need to change the blade) :) |
![]() |
| Some socks look better with the chrysanthemum paper |
![]() |
| Others shine with the rose paper |
![]() |
| Eventually all 69 pairs are ready to go |
![]() |
| Uh oh, will they all fit?? |

| The box is bursting at the seams, but it's good to go! |

Wow! You are amazing - much more beautiful than my package will be? Can I ask what shipping cost? Am trying to decide how many socks to buy!
If you are a packing genius, you can ship up to 4 lbs of stuff in a small (8-5/8" x 5-3/8" x 1-5/8") Priority Mail flat rate box for $13.95.
More realistically, packages sent via First Class Mail International cost $10.76 for one pound, $17.64 for two, $24.52 for three, and $31.40 for four.
Once you go over four pounds, you have to go via Priority Mail, which is more expensive. For instance, I ended up with 7 lbs of socks+cranes+notes+cardboard box and that was $51.85.
My 69 pairs of socks included about half men's socks and half babies' socks.
Hope this helps!
P.S. When we went to PaperSource, I was sorely tempted by all the beautiful Japanese washi paper, and started dreaming of doing notes with a washi wrap and a gold tie. Then I came back to reality. ;)
What an amazing gesture! You are such a kind soul, my friend!

I love this post soooo much.
The kids are wanting to do the same, your post is a great guideline :D
Anna, if you guys do this, there is a lady on the Socks for Japan FB page who says she has a contact who will ship them for free. Her name is Eileen Cho and her post was Friday at 4:08 PM if you need to scroll down to find it.
(To clarify, Eileen's offer was for folks in Oregon or Washington.)
